Looking on the bright side

January 23, 2008 / by shelmadine

I usually post a blog only every other day, but I'll make an exception today. Again, I can't seem to reply to any of your comments. What's the secret? Someone mentioned downloading "firebox". What's that?

But here's my the heart of my post. I watched Frontline last night (PBS) about kids and the internet nowadays. It is so scary what happens, I was mortified. It made me thankful I didn't (for the most part) have to go through that with my children. They're now ages 24-34 (3 girls, one boy) and out of the house. I had no computer when they were in their "formative" years. All I had to moniter was the television, and with no cable or satellite, that was a snap. So I (and they) escaped the negative aspects of the internet. You know what I mean. Hair curling stuff. As a single parent raising my kids, if I had to deal with this, I'd probably be a basket case by now. I escaped. That's looking on the bright side. Lucky me.

I'm with you... also feel lucky my daughters weren't exposed to this as teens.  Re comments: I can't reply to mine either.  Why some people have to try and fix what ain't broke is beyond me.  One thing that is really irritating is that when a reader tries to pull up your posts in a specific subject area (a good addition!), when they get to the bottom of the page and hit "next" to continue with the posts in that subject, it's not possible.  So, many posts appear not to be accessible. Arrrggghhh.

Hey Steve. Look, I'm replying! I downloaded "firefox" (it took awhile). How many daughters do you have?

Internet Explorer users unable to post replies to comments - This is a bug with Microsoft Internet Explorer and we'll have it taken care of shortly. If you're up for trying out a new web browser, although we're happy working with Internet Explorer, we highly recommend Firefox.

I had to switch so I could reply and upload pictures that were larger sized, not just the thumb nails - *sigh*

    Good luck to ya!!  *hugs*

    Gem~

Uhhh, you mean you don't use Firefox with Adblock Plus? Where have you been the last few years? Using (shivers) IE?

  • shelmadine said 5 months ago
Hey--give me some slack! I'm old and out of touch with reality! I don't know about "Adblock Plus", but I'm using Firefox as of 10 minutes ago!

Firefox rocks! I heart it mucho.  I think my dad would have struggled raising us as a single parent.  Lucky for him we'll never have to know.  I had the same trouble replying to comments when I was using IE 7 too at work.  Damn Pcs.  I heart MACS.

Good post. Before the changeover, I read a post from a young girl who had met a guy on line. She decided she loved him and wanted to meet him. I, mother that I am, cautioned her begging her to think things through. Asked her if she decided to meet him to pleace take someone with her. I was never able to get back on the site to check on her. I have thought about her daily. Kids are just too trusting.

Old people, too (too trusting). I had a smidge of trouble with my youngest (son), but it didn't escalate.

ABP is a Firefox add-on that is useful for filtering ads on web pages. Add-ons is under the Tools. On the Add-ons dialog, there is a Get Extensions link which will take you to the Mozilla extensions page.

Randy, was happy to hear from you--I'm not gonna download anything--will have to wait to be able to reply to comments when blogster honchos fix the problem. Stay warm, Sue.

It's amazing how adept the kids are at using the PCs. My 7-year-old grandson

    is a whiz.....which is scary.

I use Firefox now just to access this blog.  Hate running two web browsers at the same time , but that is the price for staying in touch with you guys!  You are too important to me.

Oh, I know what you mean by the internet being a scary place for kids.  I now have a grandchild to worry about, but thank goodness his parents are both computer savvy and will teach their children how to be safe, which of course, also means they will have to keep those communication lines open when their son hits the rebelliouSmiles teen years.

See, Dorothy, I didn't even know you replied to this post--I wasn't informed. That's why I'm so frustrated with this whole mess. My daughter is already having to deal with her daughter about the computer--and she's only 5!!!

Don't ge me wrong, but it was much easier raising kids in the past. The youth of today are so smart and have so many temptations.I'm glad mine are grown and on their own.I still get the phone calls for help once in awhile but that's what parents are for, right?

I hate it when I get those phone calls. It usually includes a request for money--and I'm an old softie!
